Fun Double Buns with Scunci Pin Twirls

I recently jumped at the chance to participate in the 2012 Scunci Blogger Contest, besides it sounding like a bit of fun I was intrigued by the Pin Twirls we were asked to use in our hairstyles. When I first opened the box, I’ll be honest, I kind of thought ‘they look like some sort of mini torture device, how are these going to work?’.

They are odd hair pins, but after using them I’ve found them to be great at keeping my hair done! Ill you do is twist them into the middle of your hairstyle, kind of like a screw actually. I easily came up with a few quick and simple styles, (I decided to separate the posts because these pictures could end up a mile long!)

I’m so glad I got the chance to try these because they aren’t something I would have immediately rushed out to buy myself but now that I’ve used them I really like them!

Triangle Nail Art a Tutorial

Below is an easy way I use to get sharp lines and shapes on my manicure without the use of striping tape.

I think the picture tutorial below is fairly self explanatory but there are a few steps I’d like to elaborate (below the pic)

I started by painting my nails Tahiti by ulta3 and let them dry completely.

triangle nail art tutorial

Step 1: This is what I used- clear polish (to ‘glue’ the triangles), tape (that I painted in an assortment of colours they are all unnamed BYS except for the silver which is a Nicole by OPI polish), scissors (smaller ones would have been a lot easier!) and tweezers (used to place triangles).

Step 2: Ok I wasn’t expecting this but the polish actually came off the sticky tape in one piece. I was originally going to just ‘stick’ the cut outs onto my nails but instead had to end up using the clear coat as a glue of sorts. I also cut out many many different triangles from the colours.

Step 3 & 4: I coated my nails in the clear polish and placed the triangle on in random spots, then finished off with a clear coat.

and finished, this was a bit fiddly but really easy. The only thing I have to really point out is make sure the polish ‘strips’ and your nails are dry.

Get Happy with Physicians Formula

physicians formula productsA couple of weeks ago I tweeted an instagram picture of a couple of fun new products I got sent to try out from Physician Formula. The products included:

the new Happy Booster powders in Translucent, Bronzer and the blush in Rose- these powders all have a soft satiny finish to them which I like and have a light floral scent. Cute packaging, (i just love the hearts) with a mirror and brush and are very wearable. Oh and they claim to be mood boosting, now I’m not saying that these products don’t make me happy because theypowder totally do. I actually love the products and have been wearing them on a regular basis but its more from the colours and hearts than some ‘endorphin mimicking formula’ so as far as mood boosting goes its no morning dose of Zoloft put it that way.

Organic Wear mascara in Ultra Black Organics – is yes you guessed it has 100% naturally derived ingredients. It also has a massive brush my favourite kind. Oh and its all 100% recyclable which is nice.

and the Eye Booster 2 in 1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum in Ultra Black this is a great liquid pen style liner. I can’t really comment as to whether it has a lash growing effect as I haven’t been wearing it daily but as a liner is very easy to use and very black!

To show you all how wearable they are I thought I’d try out a look only using these products (except the powder on my brows , leftover white pencil on my waterline, clear lip gloss and foundation).face4

I used the Translucent powder all over my face, Contoured slightly with the Bronzer including my eyes, I then used some of the Translucent powder on my lids (its not completely translucent, it gives the skin a bit of a glow)> Next up was winged liner and Mascara. I finished off my look with a bit of the blush on my cheeks and on my lips mixed with a bit of gloss. side face

distressed rib cage maxi a DIY tutorial

distressed rib cage dress completeBefore I moved I promised a look at the maxi dress I altered a while ago. This is pretty much as basic as an alteration can get. I got the maxi originally from an opshop for $1 and the rest of the materials where (as usual) stuff that I have lying around the house.

So lets get started, shall we!

What I used:

Grey Maxi Dress

Scissors

Chain

Fabric paint (of your choice I actually used od nail polish, something I’ve done before because I like the way it wears I didn’t want it to look perfect which is great because I cant really paint!)

Thread picker ( not entirely sure that’s what they are called?)

Needle and thread

STEP 1:

I painted a rib cage onto the dress first, as you can see its not fantastic but I don’t mind how it turned out. You will need to leave this to dry before you go any further.

1 PLAIN DRESSrib cage painted

Step 2:

The next thing I did was cut off the hems on the sleeves, bottom of the dress and around the collar. I also scooped the back down further.

cut hem and stretched to roll

Step 3:

The next thing I did was ‘distress the dress’, just by running the thread/seam picker over the material. Along the hems and some random parts of the dress.

Step 4:

I added some chains to the back just like I did in my last tutorial here. (You can see how I scooped the back)

added chains to back of dress

and finished!

Like I said this is pretty much as basic as it gets, the only sewing is to attach the chains. The painting part can easily be skipped or you can put anything you like there!

Still Kicking a FOTD and Update

I’m not dead, its just taken a lot more than I originally thought to get back into the swing of things. For starters I absolutely hate my new study/ makeup room so that will be changing. So you’ll probably notice my backgrounds change around a bit over the next month or so. There’s also been a few other things that have been taking up my time. But they are pretty boring, so onto something slightly more interesting, yeah!

lashesI just had to try out these Katy Perry Lashes as soon as they arrived. There will be a full review on the four of them once I’ve tried them all but today’s feature a pair in Oh, Honey! They really remind me of Ardell wispies which are one of my favourites for the times you want extra lashes without going completely overboard. I say without going overboard but I was just going grocery shopping so it kind of was already overboard. I get the strangest looks when I do my shopping, I guess the crazy hair doesn’t help but hell I don’t judge those that shop in their pj’s, or do I…

I am absolutely loving the lashes and can’t wait to wear them all! The lipstick was from the Mecca opening and if this colour and the Infrared are anything to go by I think I need the whole Smashbox collection.

Oh and the last snap is just from Instagram, if you have it you should totally follow me (madamebfatale) there too, hint hint..

Mecca Maxima–Brisbane’s new beauty wonderland!

mecca maxima wintergarden brisbane opening

Recently I was invited to attend the opening of Mecca Maxima, located in Brisbane’s new Wintergarden Centre. Walking through the doors I immediately felt right at ‘home’ with the luxe and almost rock inspired interior. Featuring more than 75 national and international brands, from budget friendly to luxe and everything in-between I would pretty much guarantee there is a product, or 10, for everyone.

kits nail polish varnish sleection

So what makes Mecca Maxima Stand out from regular department counters, the choice oftoo faced at mecca maxima course! Lets face it I’m a brand whore. I like trying products from all brands and the thought of only using one brand forever is not something I’m interested in. at. all. Having staff that are able to help you with information across numerous brands is a major plus because they aren’t there to push one brand. Just tell them what you are looking for and they can help you compare and select. One brand may do awesome primers, cough Smashbox cough, while another may have the perfect eye primer, insert Too Faced Shadow Insurance here. Looking for a certain shade of lipstick? Just browse through the brands and swatch as you go to compare. That’s another bonus, if you like to browse by yourself there are testers everywhere.

maxima loves glow staff picksAll brands are displayed separately and on the end of the isle’s are fabulous Maxima Loves displays that feature a couple of similar products with descriptions and prices to help you see what’s right for you.

During the ‘event’ we were able to browse the isles by ourselves and there was more than enough staff on hand to answer any questions or just have a bit of a chat about all things beauty. Like I said at the start there is pretty much something for everyone, hair care, fragrance, nails, makeup, skincare and tools, its all there

Items I picked up on the night (pictured below) include Smashbox’s new Be Legendary Lipsticks in Vivid Violet and Infrared (new favourites!), Stilla’s Smudge Pot in Black Cat which is a gorgeous shimmery black, Kit Nail Strips in an adorable heart shaped pattern that I am actually wearing right now, Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara that has a super fat wand and has been working great, 2 Kit Nail Polishes in Dive In and Power Up, Curl Up heart shaped sponge rollers – holly hell these were just too cute not to purchase and some nifty no crease clips which if you have hair as damaged as mine you know how easily hair can crease when you pin it back even just for a few moments.

mecca maxima haul

The other items pictured where in the gift bag (which I believe was a promotional item for spending over $50) with some pretty fab samples including Soap and Glory Hand Food, Origins Plantscription Anti-aging eye treatment, Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Primer, Lancôme Hypnose Drama Mascara, Stilla Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser, a Kit Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Maybe Just Once that is minty fresh and a pack of fun nail strips!

I honestly don’t think I have anything negative to say about the store, well except maybe that your wallet could easily get quite a beating as it is literally a beauty lovers dream store.

Madame B Fatale

I given a generous gift card to spend at the opening but I also spent some of my own cash. Thanks again to Mecca for including me and a fabulous time!
