Decades Past – 1930’s

The 1930s were not only the start to the Great Depression but was also  the era of the Silver Screen Siren…

Mae West – the comedian and actress

17th August 1893 – 22nd November 1980

West one of the first actresses to star and write in her own roles and it was acknowledged that she may have helped saved the debt ridden Paramount Pictures in the 1930’s.

Mae very publically hated many of her co-stars and only appeared an around

mae west “It’s better to be looked over than overlooked.”

greta garbo –  The Swedish Sphinx

18th September 1905 – 15th April 1990

Born in Sweden, Garbo never originally aspired to be an actress. It wasn’t until at her job at a department store she appeared in an advertising short.Greta_Garbo

Starred in 32 roles , one of the most popular being Anna Karenina in 1935, Garbo never returned to the silver screen after the war. Moved to New York City where she lived the rest of her life away from the cameras.

‘Being a movie star, and this applies to all of them, means being looked at from every possible direction. You are never left at peace, you’re just fair game.”

Jean Harlow – original platinum blonde

3rd March 1911 – 7th June 1937

Tragically died at the young age of only 26, Harlow was known as the original platinum blonde.Jean_Harlow

She was Marilyn Monroe’s idol and both had their last film appearances alongside popular actor Cary Grant.

“Men like me because I don’t wear a brassiere. Women like me because I don’t look like a girl who would steal a husband. At least not for long.”

Gypsy Rose Lee – Burlesque Queen

9th February 1911 – 26th April 1970

Gypsy Rose Lee  was one of the first Burlesque stars to realise the importance of publicity and became one of the most successful burlesque performers during her time, and all with out baring all!gypsy_rose_lee

She penned the novel “The G-String Murders” which was later adapted into the film “The Lady of Burlesque” featuring Barbara Stanwyck.

A Broadway play of her life entitled Gypsy was an enormous success and was later made to film also.

My favourite Brushes!

I will include my video response (with pictures) at the end of the post but I though I might take this time to write down some of my thoughts of these brushes!

The Smashbox #24

I adore this brush for all powders!! For not only initial application but also for contouring and buffing out if I’ve accidently gone a little heavy.

The brush is nice and soft dense, and has held up really well over the two years I’ve had it.

The Smashbox #23

Lovely brush, I would probably use this daily.

The brush it self is also soft and dense, give more control with contouring and highlighting than other brushes I’ve tried.

I’ve had this the same amount of time as the #24

The Ecotools Eyeliner brush

I love this as an eyebrow brush. Gives a great finish. My favourite eyebrow brush I have.

I think its too soft for use as an eyeliner brush though 🙁

The  Shiseido Eyeliner Brush

This came as a travel size with their creme eyeliner I purchased. This would be the perfect brush if only it was longer. I love it!

Great control, still very soft but gives a perfect line.

The Mac 187

I pretty much fell in love with this brush as soon as I got it ! (LOL) I use it for not only liquid foundation but also my cream ones too. Give the most natural finish and is quick.

I also use it for both cream and powder blushes.  Bronzer too, as I’m very pale and I only ever want a very light application.

The Mac 219

This brush gives perfect control for the crease, under and around eye area’s.  I also love it for detailed blending.

Thanks for reading 😉

Review Revlon Lashes

I was sent these lashes to do a review on from a lovely Revlon rep..

REVLON FANTASY LENGTHS

MAXIMUN WEAR SELF -ADHESIVE LASHES

From website:

“REVLON® Fantasy Lengths™ Maximum Wear eyelashes are a revolutionary way to go from Plain Jane to Naturally Fantastic instantly. Without messy glue to fumble with – you can have perfect lashes that stay where you want them to – even in water!”

Here are My thoughts

To be honest, at first i was very sceptical about these actually working. To me these  seemed more like a fad than anything else.

But, I was pleasantly surprised! The adhesive band was very sticky and made for a very quick application without having to wait for a regular glue to get tacky.

I would definitely recommend using  the applicator tool, they stuck far better when i did use this. (You can also use it against the top as a guard to apply mascara to blend the falsies and your own together!) Also when applying, put in place hold down inner then outer and then hold down the entire strip with the applicator. I found this to be the best method.

The other thing i would recommend is that you should wear a black liner on your top lash line to blend the lashes with your own. As the glue adhesive band is black.

The lashes give a ‘natural’ effect and i think would be suitable for everyday wear. They are very flexible yet strong, and didn’t come apart when i cleaned them as some lashes do.

I tried the first pair on my sister without any makeup just to see how they apply. (as you can see she does have cosmetic tattooing but it has faded, a little bit of black liner would have blended the line nicely)

She really isn’t used to wearing lashes, as hers are pretty full anyway. She said she was surprised that she didn’t have a heavy feeling from them!

Here i applied a set on me but with blue liner, a black liner would have worked better though.

A very natural effect!

The  next lot were

REVLON FANTASY LENGTHS

MAXIMUN WEAR GLUE ON LASHES

from the website

“Glamorize your eyes! Instantly get beautiful sexy lashes in a snap with REVLON® Fantasy Lengths™ Maximum Wear Glue On eyelashes. Glue included.”

These are the types of lashes that I’m used to.

They also give a lovely effect but are a bit fuller than the self-adhesive kind.

The glue included is actually great, it got tacky fast, dried nicely and lasted all night. There is not much else to say but I’m very pleases with these too!

These are another pair my favourite. (sorry no picture of package but they are – 91128 LUSH) Also kind of hard to see with all the black sorry again! They come in 4 separated lash sections and look so pretty!

(Oh and the last three are actually from upcoming tutorials!)

As many of you know i  mainly use those lashes from sets on eBay in my tutorials, and whilst I do love them these lashes are lighter, more flexible and definitely easier to apply.

They also give a more natural effect, I know many of you aren’t comfortable with the full on  lashes that i tend to wear and these are a great other option to give a similar effect but  easier to wear.

So what I’m trying to say is

  • Both types are very flexible for an easy fit
  • They are all light and you barely even notice your wearing them
  • Gives a lovely fluttery natural look
  • Easy to apply
  • Nifty little applicator included in the self-adhesive
  • Easy to clean

So you can now make up your own mind from these pictures!!

Elisha , my sister for those of you that don’t know, was going to the races today and wanted me to do her makeup. I also fixed her hair up (as much as i could with 2 mins to spare!)

Here are the photo’s just before she left.

We just went for a basic Teal Smokey eye to brighten up the outfit a bit.

Changing of the Seasons

With the Australian summer just around the corner and the weather already heating up it really is time to get ready.

Exfoliate-

If you aren’t exfoliating regularly its time to start now!

Trying to save some cash? Well you don’t have to pay big buck for this you could easily DIY it, Click here for an example recipe. But there are many on the internet just do a search!

Have you tried exfoliating gloves before? glovesThey are  inexpensive and really do help.

Exfoliating is especially needed if you are a tanner.

Two of my favourite fake tans are

SugarBaby Suntanned Sweeties

sugarbabytanner

which is a really easy spray on tan and I find is a great ‘natural’ colour for my pale as the moon body!

Another I like is the Dove Gradual Tanners.

dovetanner

They are great for slowly building up a nice tan.

Please remember Guys and Dolls if you tan make sure its a fake bake as there is nothing cool about skin cancer!

The sun  also helps to age your skin faster so please remember to wear sunscreen !

Moisturise-

After exfoliating its really important to moisturise. There are many choices to pick from ranging from the cheap like one of my favourites

Nivea Moisturising Lotion niveawhich retails at around $8 depending on where you purchase to the more expensive

MOR Body Butter

( I love this, it was originally given to me as a gift and i 350_Pomegranate.Body.Butter.jpglove the scent and feel of them!)

Feet and Hands-

Out go the boots and in come the sandals. This is the time to start those neglected winter feet!

There are many heel balms and foot files you can purchase to do them yourself either between appointments or if your like me to do completely yourself. (I hate people touching my feet, i know weird phobia!)

Why not try a bright polish on those toes to get yourself in the summer mood!

For your hands another product I like is handsSally Hansen Hand Resurfacer

to help smooth those dry winter hands.

Face-

Going to the beach or pools,   the water and humidity really don’t mix well with makeup so we tend to wear less.

Lash and brow tinting  can help give a more polished look without having to apply makeup and can last a few weeks.

Lash tinting in particular can help open your eyes by defining and giving the appearance of longer lashes.

So what are you plans for getting ready for summer and what are the products you reach for?

Decades past – 1920’s

The Jazz age and the birth of the Celebrity

During the Twenties hemlines rose, girdles were thrown out, women were smoking in public and make up was applied – heavily.

Key points to the  Look:

  • Pale, almost Ivory Skin
  • Very Thin penciled in dark eyebrows
  • ‘Cupids Bow’ or ‘Bee  Stung’ Lips
  • lips were coloured deep reds or plum shades
  • Dark Smokey eye
  • Dark greys and Turquoises were used
  • Hair was bobbed or tight waves

Famous from the Decade

Theda Bara – The Vamp

29th July 1885 – 7th April 1955

Theda-Bara

Theda starred in as many as 44 films and yet nearly all had been lost in a fire at fox studios. known as the original Vamp as she repeatedly portrayed a sexy temptress with a dangerous allure that ruined the good hearted man.

Because of this she was publicly ostracised for it as the audiences seemed to believed that she was actually like the character she was portraying.

“To understand those days, you must consider that people believed what they saw on the screen….Audiences thought the stars were the way they saw them. Why, women kicked my photographs as they went into the theatres where my pictures were playing, and once on the streets of New York a woman called the police because her child spoke to me.”

Louise Brooks – The Flapper

14th November 1906 – 8th August 1985

brooks_louise2

Born Mary Louise Brooks and at 5”2 she was as well known as a dancer and movie star but also for being sexually promiscuous particularly for the time!

“Love is a publicity stunt, and making love – after the first curious raptures – is only another petulant way to pass the time waiting for the studio to call.”

Clara Bow – The celebrity

29th July 1905 – 27th September 1965

ClaraBow

Clara was born into poverty and violence and yet became known as the ‘It” Girl of the 20’s. Her own mother tried to slit her throat when she learnt tat her ambition was to become a star.

She starred in 58 films and retired by the age of only 28!

Clara really was the ‘celebrity’ of the decade and was receiving up to 45, 000 letters a month from fans during the height of her fame.

Favourite fact – had a love affair with Bela Lugosi!

“We had individuality. We did as we pleased. We stayed up late. We dressed the way we wanted. I used to whiz down Sunset Boulevard in my open Kissel, with several red Chow dogs to match my hair. Today, they’re sensible and end up with better health. But we had more fun.”

Coco Chanel –  The designer

19th August 1883 (clamed it was 1893) – 10th January 1971

CocoChanel

Created  arguably the most influential fashion house in history Chanel learnt to sew in convent school.

Created Chanel no.5 in 1922, a blended floral scent, first for its time. (Opposed to the single flower scents.)

“I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness. And then you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny , and its best to be as pretty as possible for destiny”
