PMD Microdermabrasion at home –a review

by Brie from Madame B Fatale on December 19, 2012

You may have read the title and thought why the hell is she doing, microdermabrasion at home….? .As you all know I do love do it yourself projects but I would usually rather a professional treating any major skin issues. But I was just too damn curious about the PMD to pass up the offer of reviewing one of the devices.microdermabrasion at home pmd device and replacement discs

Before the PMD arrived I read as many reviews as I could find, watched The Doctors segment and a few other videos and became more and more excited to trial the device. I mean I did come across a few reviews that didn’t rate it highly but from what I could tell from the instructions I had also read a lot of these were more than likely due to them having too sensitive skin, using it more than once a week or holding the device on for too long.

Below is the introduction explaining what microdermabrasion is (much clearer than what I could explain it!).

“The idea behind microdermabrasion is that if you break-apart and remove the dead skin cells on the stratum corneum skin layer, the body will interpret this as a mild injury and rush to replace the lost cells with healthy new ones.

The process benefits the skin in numerous ways. When the stratum corneum is removed, the skin’s surface, tone, and texture is visibly improved. The new cells generated during the healing process look and fell smoother. Many of the skins visible imperfections – such as sun damage, blemishes, fine lines, and dark spots – improve as well.

Without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, skin care products can be fully absorbed and the greater penetration helps maximise the product benefits. Skincare products are up to 20 times more effective when combined with microdermabrasion”

The first time I used the device I was more skeptical than scared but both of those thoughts were gone as soon as I had finished my initial treatment. My skin (I’m sure you’ve all heard me complain about) is dry/combination, I have freckles, clogged pores, plus flakies that makes it extremely difficult for me to get a foundation to sit on my skin flawlessly and smooth. The texture of my flaky skin has always been my main concern. I patch tested my skin with the white training device on a few spots and did my first treatment with the blue disc. There has been no pain, very little to no redness. Basically for me it just feels like a tiny vacuum running across my skin.

after PMD

I have done 5 treatments so far and am currently using the green disc but I have purchased the red to try out as well. The new smoother texture to my skin is simply amazing, I like to do my treatments after I take my makeup off of an afternoon so it has at least all night to ‘breathe’ before I apply makeup the next day. I don’t think I could be happier with the results, besides my skin feeling a trillion times better and kind of has this almost glow that it didn’t have before I have also just been using MAC Face and Body foundation and some concealer for my dark circles (you cannot use the PMD on the eye area). Before that I would have required a much fuller coverage foundation for me to be somewhat happy with my appearance. I should mention that it takes less than 5 minutes to do my face from cleanse to finish and there was a particularly large pore on my forehead that I used to hate that has become less noticeable which is another massive plus in my books.

I have also done a few treatments on my left hand, I completely forgot to take before pictures but if you compare it to my right people can spot the difference. Thank god I have done enough treatments to put that photo up because I have been dying to try it on the other hand as well this whole time!

The PMD Personal Microderm retails for $181USD on www.personalmicroderm.com for the international version and I know its sold on the SkincareRX site because I was going to purchase replacement discs from there before I realised how high shipping would have been.

There is also an Australian website in the works but in the mean time you can buy either the device or the discs from TVSN if you are located in Australia (on there it is $179AUD plus shipping and you get 12 bonus discs!).
